It’s about that time of year again, people. The time when studios begin pimping movies, actor and actresses to Academy voters and regular ol’ movie goers are able to view the films that have been buzzed about for months. October has typically been a warmup for the real Oscar bait films that premiere in November and December. But this year there are plenty of Oscar buzz-y movies premiering in October.

Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron’s first feature film since 2007’s Children of Men, Gravity, has critics buzzing about Sandra Bullock’s performance and Cuaron’s innovative filmmaking style. Meanwhile, Captain Phillips and All Is Lost, too movies centered around two American acting icons (Tom Hanks and Robert Redford, respectively), escaping from dangerous nautical situations. Then there is 12 Years A Slave, the early Oscar front-runner that chronicles the true story of a Solomon Northup, a free man abducted and sold into slavery. And if that wasn’t enough comes the latest from director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Prometheus) called The Counselor, which boasts an all-star cast that includes Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem,  and Cameron Diaz.
