In a remarkably heartfelt and groundbreaking essay, NBA center Jason Collins proudly announced that he was gay. “I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay,” he wrote in the lede of the Sports Illustrated piece. Collins is the first active, well semi- active (he is not currently on an NBA roster), player from one of the four major sports to openly come out and we at the Double A Podcast decided it was necessary to call up Molly Yanity, a sportswriter-turned-professor who is also a lesbian. Molly discusses the potential impact of Collins coming out and how encouraging it was to hear the outpouring of support.
But before getting into that conversation, the gentlemen discuss some of latest NBA news, including: Dwight Howard being Dwight Howard and the ugliness of the Lakers, if the Thunder can survive in a post-Russell Westbrook world and why everyone in the basketball world loves Steph Curry.
